The Smoking Mirror
Middle grade · ages 9–12 · 780L · 2016
A genuinely bilingual adventure that weaves Aztec cosmology into contemporary MG without condescension; language and mythology are the real draw, though the pacing can feel dense for reluctant readers.
The Prince and the Coyote
Picture book · ages 5–9 · 620L · 2022
A visually sumptuous identity tale rooted in Mesoamerican myth; Bowles balances magical adventure with real emotional stakes around belonging and self-acceptance.
They Call Me Güero
Verse novel · ages 10–14 · 680L · 2018
A stunning introduction to colorism and code-switching for kids who are living it and those who aren't — the verse form makes hard truths feel manageable, and Güero's voice is unflinching without being didactic.
