For a reader who just finished
after We Play Football! by Jagger Youssef · ages 3–6
Picture book · grades K–1 · 250L
A straightforward sports story that works well for kids who love the game but lacks the narrative depth of top-tier picture books.
Same style
by Mo Willems
Picture book · ages 3–6 · grades K–1 · 300L
A picture book that takes toddler loss seriously without trauma—realistic parents, genuine comfort-object stakes, and the reassurance that caregivers will fix it.
by Wanda Gág
Picture book · ages 3–7 · grades K–2 · 300L · 1999
A 1923 original that earned its Newbery Honor—the ABC sequence feels natural to the chase narrative, not forced, and the pen-and-ink illustrations have genuine charm even on modern screens.
by Eric Carle
Picture book · ages 4–8 · grades K–3 · 320L · 2013
A warm, gently philosophical Carle with his trademark collage art—the rooster's wanderlust feels earned, and the homecoming lands because we've felt his genuine discovery.
Stretch them up
by Ben Clanton
Early reader · ages 4–8 · grades K–3 · 420L · 2016
Clanton's warmth and deadpan absurdist humor make this the gold-standard friendship book for early readers—kids laugh, absorb kindness without preaching, and ask for it again.
by Micha Archer
Picture book · ages 4–8 · grades K–3 · 420L · 2021
A quiet, joyful celebration of noticing — the kind of book that trains kids to actually *see* the world and ask real questions instead of moving past it.
Picture book · ages 4–8 · grades K–3 · 450L
Sendak's celebration of joyful chaos and rule-breaking play — the illustrations are the real story, and kids return to this one asking 'read it again?' because the strangeness feels like permission.
Complementing on fairness
by Dr. Seuss
Picture book · ages 4–8 · grades K–3 · 590L · 1988
A surprisingly political Seuss story about quiet resistance to tyranny; the burp is funny enough to distract from the heavy-handed moral, which actually works.
Nonfiction · ages 5–9 · grades K–4 · 620L · 2024
Mellody Hobson's voice makes money genuinely approachable for younger kids — practical, inclusive, and unapologetically focused on agency and giving, not just accumulation.
We'd skip — for now
by Ruth Stiles Gannett
A step up — ages 9–12 · grades 4–7
Skip it if your child has strong separation anxiety or is unsettled by a young child away from parents for an extended journey.
