For a reader who just finished
after Star Wars Hunters - Battle for the Arena by Mark Oshiro · ages 7–10
Middle grade · grades 2–5 · 550L
A solid entry point for Star Wars fans who are ready to move from picture books to text-heavy adventures, though the arena combat is more intense than typical middle-grade fare.

by C. S. Lewis
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 780L · 2020
A prequel that works beautifully as entry point: less battle-heavy than The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, grounded in a real child's moral struggle, and the world-creation arc is genuinely awe-inspiring—though Jadis's arrival carries real menace.

Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 720L · 2026
A solid fantasy-adventure with a cursed-princess protagonist who actually investigates her own story instead of waiting for rescue — the curse is the engine of the plot, not decoration.
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 720L · 1993
A solid survival-and-loyalty story with dog-centered appeal, though the pacing feels a touch dated compared to modern animal-protagonist fiction.
Stretch them up
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 730L · 2018
A genuinely smart mystery that teaches the hard history of Jim Crow without moralizing — kids solve the puzzle alongside the protagonist while learning what systemic racism looked like up close.
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 740L · 2007
A quietly brilliant friendship epic that rewards rereading—the mystery unfolds organically through play, and the prose trusts kids to hold complexity (multiple POV, time shifts, moral ambiguity about the old man).
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 720L · 1999
A genuinely moving book about how cruelty disguises itself as normality—Hillary's journey from skeptical outsider to true friend feels earned, and Sara's inner world is treated with real dignity.
Complementing on perspective taking
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 750L · 2019
A richly layered book about sisterhood, identity, and reckoning with parental complexity that treats kids' emotional intelligence seriously—the ending doesn't tidy up, which is exactly why it stays with them.
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 760L · 2021
A Depression-era jewel that doesn't lecture—Turtle's scrappiness and the vividness of Key West make history immediate, and the message (belonging is something you find, not something you inherit) lands quietly and hard.
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 780L · 1983
A luminous, unflinching story about difference and belonging—Thomas's lyrical prose and Auri's quiet dignity make this a memorable introduction to how communities can choose love, and how a girl learns her own worth.
We'd skip — for now
by J.R.R. Tolkien
A step up — ages 10–14 · grades 5–9
Skip it if your child has been genuinely frightened by dragons or intense battle scenes; Smaug's death and the final battle are visceral and sustained, not cartoonish.
