For a reader who just finished
after Heist Society Collection by Ally Carter · ages 12–16
Young adult · grades 7–11 · 850L
A fast-paced, witty YA adventure that captures the thrill of heist fiction without the heavy moral weight of darker teen novels.
Same style
Young adult · ages 12–16 · grades 7–11 · 820L · 2011
A quietly ambitious fantasy with intricate magic-system worldbuilding and a protagonist whose outsider status feels earned—less flashy than contemporary YA but genuinely engrossing for patient readers.
Young adult · ages 10–14 · grades 5–9 · 850L · 2010
The foundational gender-nonconforming fantasy adventure — Alanna's defiance is earned, not preached, and the friendships feel genuine enough that rereads still sting.
Young adult · ages 14–18 · grades 9–12 · 820L
Chokshi crafts a gorgeous, intricate heist-mystery with genuine character stakes — the worldbuilding is ornate enough to reward close reading, and the four-person ensemble avoids the love-triangle drag of many YA fantasies.
Stretch them up
Young adult · ages 14–18 · grades 9–12 · 1050L · 2024
A genuine doorstop fantasy that respects teen readers' intelligence — ornate prose, deep worldbuilding, and a narrator whose unreliability becomes part of the pleasure.
by Rick Riordan
Young adult · ages 12–18 · grades 7–12 · 950L · 2025
Riordan’s best work — the humor is sharper and the stakes feel more personal than in Percy Jackson, making it a perfect bridge for readers ready to graduate from middle grade.
Young adult · ages 14–18 · grades 9–12 · 1050L
A dense, formally inventive sequel that trusts teens with historical ambiguity and moral complexity; Anderson's fragmented prose mirrors Octavian's fractured selfhood, and the sea-voyage setting carries genuine weight.
Complementing on problem solving
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 740L · 2003
The most gripping book in the series—a taut survival narrative that doesn't sentimentalize hardship, and kids emerge understanding both pioneer resourcefulness and genuine historical vulnerability.
Middle grade · ages 9–12 · grades 4–7 · 780L · 2020
A nail-biting real-world rescue told with genuine suspense and respect for both the boys and the multinational team that saved them—no melodrama, just brilliant problem-solving under impossible conditions.
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · grades 3–7 · 750L · 1999
A Newbery winner that earns it — ingenious premise, beautiful technical illustrations, and a protagonist who thinks his way out of catastrophe rather than stumbling through.
We'd skip — for now
by Sarah J. Maas
A step up — ages 16–18 · grades 11–12
Skip it if graphic sexual content, profanity, or sustained violence in fantasy settings are off-limits; the third act includes visceral combat and on-page intimacy.
