The Defender
by Nicholas Kalashnikoff
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · 720L · 1993
A solid survival-and-loyalty story with dog-centered appeal, though the pacing feels a touch dated compared to modern animal-protagonist fiction.
The Black Stallion
by Walter Farley
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · 720L · 1968
A genuine adventure that holds up — the island survival is tense enough to keep pages turning, and the horse-whispering arc feels earned rather than magical, which kids respect.
Scary Stories for Young Foxes
by Christian McKay Heidicker
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · 720L · 2021
A genuinely clever frame—young foxes telling each other scary stories to prove their bravery—that legitimizes both the scares and the friendships, without dipping into sustained dread.
