Every Heart a Doorway
Middle grade · ages 10–14 · 720L · 2016
A genuinely strange, tightly plotted novella about kids who've been to other worlds and can't go home — dark but tender, and the first work to center disabled and queer protagonists in portal fantasy without apology.
Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos
Middle grade · ages 8–12 · 790L · 2026
McGuire writes a neurodiverse protagonist without making neurodivergence the problem; the magic school adventure is genuine, but the belonging storyline is what lands.
Down Among the Sticks and Bones
Young adult · age 14+ · 780L · 2017
A dark, formally inventive sequel that stands alone—twin sisters rebuild identity in a dangerous world, and McGuire forces you to hold two conflicting truths at once.
Middlegame
Middle grade · ages 10–14 · 820L · 2020
Smart, linguistically playful middle-grade fantasy that treats neurodivergence and sibling interdependence with genuine respect—not as plot devices but as the backbone of how the characters save the world.
